David Ben-Gurion – Crucial Decisions

Audio-visual presentation

The audio-visual movie is based around a short storyline of a final competition on leadership between a young man and a young woman. The contest focuses on five crucial decisions made by Ben-Gurion which shaped the history of the State and Israeli society.

Each decision is built in a similar fashion:

  • Short historical background
  • Presentation of the formative decision
  • Different decisions- posed by explanatory words or by historical advisors integrated within the movie
  • The choice made by Ben-Gurion
  • The significance of the decision

The first decision: MASS ALIYA

Ben-Gurion's decision on unlimited, mass aliya despite the dangers and difficulties – the overcrowding in the transit camps, the lacking logistical infrastructure, the lack of employment

The second decision: STATE AND RELIGION

Ben-Gurion's decision on the status quo agreement, a decision which promised the existence of the state of the whole Jewish people, and, determined the character of the State as a Jewish one.

The third decision: BUILDING AN AUTHORATIVE FORCE

The decision emphasizes the transfer from a society based on volunteering to an official society.  The change from a settlement to a state and the incorporation of all the defending forces to one army, (the Altalena episode)

The fourth decision: GOING UP TO THE NEGEV

The decision emphasizes Ben-Gurion's choice in personal example and the importance of the Negev in Ben-Gurion's teachings, not just as a part of the land but as a leading idea for the unification of the people for the next pioneering mission.

The fifth decision: DECLARATION OF THE STATE

The decision attempts to express the great drama leading up to the declaration of the State, the fear of refusing the American proposal of trusteeship and Ben-Gurion's moves which placed all his integrity to decide on an immediate declaration.  Or as he defined it: "It is now or never".

And another general comment:

The audio-visual movie attempts to describe not just the persuasive abilities of Ben-Gurion, the public's belief in him, and the internal logic of the decisions, but also another hidden, special characteristic which is difficult to define: a historical intuition, which allowed Ben-Gurion to fulfill his position of a lifetime: to be the founding father of the State of Israel.
